DRY LOOSE BULK DENSITY OF COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE

 AIM:-

  • To Determine of dry loose bulk density of course and fine aggregates,
  • As per IS : 2386-( Part-3) -1963.
  • Sampling Code IS : 2430,

APPARATUS:-

  1. Weight Balance accuracy 0.5%.
  2. Temping road - 16mm diameter 600mm long,
  3. Enamel Tray.
  4. Steel Scoop.
  5. Cylindrical Container - 3, 15, 30 Ltr, shown in table.

  • SIZE OF CONTAINER FOR BULK DENSITY TEST

SIZE OF LARGEST PARTICLES IN (MM) NOMINAL CAPACITY (LTR) IN SIDE DIAMETER (CM) IN SIDE HIGHT (CM) THICKNESS OF METAL MINIMUM
Under 4.75 mm. 3 15 17 3.15
Over 4.75mm to 40mm 15 25 30 4.0
Over 40mm 30 35 31 5.0

PROCEDURE:-
  • Condition of specimen: the test shall be normally be carried our on dry material when determining the voids. But when bulking tests are required material with a given percentage of moisture may be used.
LOOSE BULK DENSITY:
  • The measure shall be filled to overflowing by means of a shovel or scoop, the aggregate being discharged from a height not exceeding 5 cm above the top of the measure.
  • Care shall be taken to prevent, as for as possible, segregation of the particle sizes of which the sample is composed.
  • The surface of the aggregate shall then be levelled with a straightedge.
  • The net weight of the aggregate in the measure shall than be determined and the bulk density calculated in kilogram per litre.
RODDED OR COMPACTED BULK DENSITY:-
  • The measure shall be filled about one third full with thoroughly mixed aggregate and trapped with 25 stokes of the rounded end of the tamping rod.
  • A further similar quantity of aggregate shall be aggregate shall be added and a further tamping of 25 stokes given.
  • The measure shall be finally be filled to over flowing, tamped 25 times and the surplus aggregate struck off, using the tamping rod as a straightedge.
  • The net weight of the aggregate in the measure shall be determined and the bulk density calculated in kilogram per litre.
CALCULATIONS:-
  • ( Container + Sample wt) --- Empty container wt
  • Container Volume
